KNOWING THE WAY TO TAKE

What do we do when we feel confused or unsure for the future, and we need some solid direction and guidance? This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls”. But you said, “We will not walk in it” (Jeremiah 6:16)

STAND….at crossroads (Reflection).

Why stand at a crossroads? To ensure the correct destination, it is important to look at the signpost

at the crossroads to ensure that it points in the right direction. To do this, it is important to reflect

from where we have come. We need to stand back to see the bigger picture, in order to see the

implications of further travel. It is easy to miss the obvious, if we do not make time to step back and

reflect.

LOOK…..for direction (the Word of God).

In any walk in unknown territory, it is essential to have a map. What physical features are there to be

seen?  Do the land features align with the map? If in doubt regarding the way, a map is essential. In

the same way, it is imperative that we consult the map provided to us (the word of God). Investing

time in doing so will shed light on whether we might otherwise be deceived. Look for the revelation

from the Word of Truth. We read the Word, the Holy Spirit gives insight and light to what we read.

ASK……for the ancient paths/ good way (Prayer and Support).

This verse suggests that someone is available at the crossroads to be able to give direction. In our

case, there is One who can give the directions we need. Prayer is an essential element of the

Christian life, where the “plans of God” are revealed. The wisdom of God gives us the direction we

need. Listen for God’s instruction, and hold it in our hearts. Fellow travellers who are familiar with

the same, or similar, journey can also be of great help.

WALK…….in it (Personal Responsibility).

Walk in the light of God’s word. We walk according to the light we have received. Further difficulties

do not mean we have taken a wrong path. We can be confident in the way outlined to us, because it

has been specially selected for us by God. So God led the people around by the desert road toward

the Red Sea. (Ex. 13:17, 18) God had a plan. It meant that Israel endured the desert to avoid war. The

way God outlines to us may be difficult, but we need to follow His leading.

REST……for our souls. (Relationship).

Any country walk will involve a time of rest and refreshment.  We may become burdened by the

complex twists and turns of life. Rest and security can only be found in God when we spend

quality time in His presence. Such rest found in our investment with our time with God helps to

develop our relationship, and give us further confidence for the journey.

WE WILL NOT.……Refusal (Humility)

We sometimes disagree with a car SatNav because we think we know better! Humility is an essential attribute in an unfamiliar territory, because God does know best! Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not (don’t rely) on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (Prov. 3:5, 6)

If we want to ensure that we are not caught out in taking the wrong path in life, we need to Stand, Look, Ask, Walk, Rest, and exhibit Humility. Then we will be able to negotiate our journey safely and securely.
