OUR CERTAINTIES In An UNCERTAIN AGE
How do you respond when you witness increasing wholesale rejection of God’s ways in
society? Perhaps like most with anger, frustration, despair, anxiety or woe. If so,
you are in good company with the writer of Psalm 94:
Rise up, O Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. How long will the
wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked be jubilant? They say, “The LORD does not see;
the God of Jacob pays no heed.” (Ps 94:2,3,7)
However, as we read through the rest of this Psalm, we recognize that the writer also
responded with a sense of certainty following his initial uncertainties:
CERTAINTY OF GOD HEARING & SEEING
Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? (Ps 94:9)
God hears (and sees and feels) because God created these senses. We have nothing within our nature which is not possessed in higher measure by our Creator God. Therefore, God is not unaware of all that takes place on the earth including the rejection of His ways.
CERTAINTY THAT GOD WILL NOT FORSAKE HIS PEOPLE
For the LORD will not reject His people; He will never forsake His inheritance. (Ps 94:14)
Whilst the world rejects God, God will never reject all those who are His own.
CERTAINTY OF A RETURN TO GODLY JUDGMENT
Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it. (Ps 94:15)
The Psalmist recognized that rejection of God’s ways is only temporary until His righteousness is recognized by all those who are upright.
CERTAINTY OF GOD’S LOVE, SUPPORT and SECURITY
When I have seemed lost, anxious or upset in my spirit, the following verses have always
spoken to me very powerfully:
When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me. When anxiety was
great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul. But the LORD has become my
fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. (Ps. 94:18, 19, 22)
CERTAINTY OF THE ULTIMATE DESTINY OF THE WICKED
He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God
will destroy them. (Ps 94:22, 23)
In our responses to the godlessness we all see around us every day, may we also be
comforted by the certainties we have from God’s perspective!
