Open Your Mouth Wide

“I am the LORD your God,

Who brought you out of the land of Egypt;

Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” Psalm 81v10

 Imagine a 20 year old Israelite man or woman who crossed the Red Sea and came out of Egypt. What a pity it would be if that person only asked God for relatively small things over the next 40 years of their lives. They had seen and experienced God doing something awesome, miraculous, and dramatic for them, but it’s as if they had forgotten that.

This is a gracious invitation from God. It’s as if He is saying to us, “See how I did such a big thing for you. See My willingness to do it. Don’t spend your life just opening your mouth a little bit, open wide!”

 Picture a mother bird bringing back food to the baby sparrows in the nest. Do you think that the baby sparrows only open their mouths a tiny bit? No! They are wide open, as wide as it’s possible for them to be! They want to get everything they can possibly get from the mother. What about us? Do we only open our mouths a little, asking God for relatively small things? Perhaps we are scared of being disappointed? Perhaps we feel we only deserve small things? Of course we must frequently ask God for relatively small things day by day - wisdom in everyday decisions, strength, help in our studies or work. But we must not forget to ask for big things too!

 Remember God has saved us, redeemed us, rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of light. God uses exactly the same kind of reasoning with us in Romans 8v32. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”

God who has done the greatest possible thing for us, says that He is willing to ‘freely give us all things’!

 So today, let’s open our mouth wide in prayer. Let’s be bold in what we ask God for. He has clearly stated in His Word that He is willing to do BIG things for us; perhaps He is just waiting for us to really ask Him in earnest, with our mouths wide open. Let’s ask Him for the big things, with full knowledge that He is more than ready to give them.
