Open Your Mouth Wide
Imagine a 20 year old Israelite man or woman who crossed the Red Sea and came out of Egypt. What a pity it would be if that person only asked God for relatively small things over the next 40 years of their lives. They had seen and experienced God doing something awesome, miraculous, and dramatic for them, but it’s as if they had forgotten that.
MOSES: A SNAKE THAT CURES
Israel had forgotten how hard life in Egypt had been: they had been hard pressed and physically exploited; and they had quickly become discontented with God's kindness in miraculously providing food and water at just the right time.
Joshua : Moving Heaven and Earth
I am sure we have all heard the expression, “moving heaven and earth”, meaning doing our utmost to succeed at something, whatever the odds or cost. It appears that the earliest recorded use of this expression was in France in 1564 in relation to the change from the Julian to Gregorian calendar. At that time about 10 days were lost from the calendar, which brought to mind for some the time God arranged for a day to be lost, as recorded for us in Joshua 10.
JOSHUA: THE END OF MANNA
When the spiritual manna stops, we have a choice: to find our own food, and that for others around us, in order to thrive; or risk spiritual starvation. Which will we choose?
Choose The Right Fear
We are told multiple times in the Scriptures, “Do not fear”. Fear is generally a negative thing. However there is one fear that we are to embrace;
MOSES: TURNING ASIDE
Turning aside from the daily round of life is much more difficult these days in our fast-paced and consumeristic society, but it is essential if we desire to hear the Lord’s “still small voice” and His direction for our lives.
HOW’S YOUR PLUMBING?
Obtaining water in Bible times was time-consuming and tiring. It was time-consuming because a woman would be expected to walk to the nearest well and fill her vessel using a well bucket, and then carry the now full vessel back home, a chore she may have needed to repeat during the day. It was tiring because the woman would have needed to collect the water, possibly in the heat of the day, and then carry the heavy vessel back to her home.
I will pour out My Spirit
In the last days, God will pour out His Holy Spirit, not only on the priests, not only on people who are especially anointed, not only on a specially chosen elite, but on all kinds of people, regardless of age (old and young), gender (sons and daughters), or social status (menservants and maidservants).
DIGGING FOR VICTORY
Have you ever made a decision, thinking this was a great course of action, only to find difficulties and problems later on? Perhaps you may even blame God for the situation, when you failed to ask His direction in the first place. This is exactly what happened to the three kings of Israel, Judah and Edom. (2 Kings 3)
FORGOTTEN?
Have you ever felt overlooked, or forgotten? I know I have, particularly when I was younger! When we describe ourselves as having remembered something, it is often because it had earlier slipped our mind………….. There are several places in the Bible where God is described as "remembering".
A Disciple of Jesus… Gives Thanks
A disciple of Jesus is characterised by having a heart of thanksgiving. So often, our prayers are jam packed with requests, but Paul exhorts us to remember to be thankful as we pray.
A Disciple of Jesus … Makes Disciples
If someone were to ask you for directions because they were lost, would you become embarrassed, shuffle your feet, and waffle some answer or would you clearly and concisely outline the directions they needed to take? Because the person was lost, and they need an urgent resolution to their situation, we would clearly state the directions necessary ('First left past the shops, then right, and right again…..'). Of course, in order to give physical directions to someone who might be lost, we ourselves will need to have first-hand experience of the locality in order to accurately provide the necessary directions.
A disciple of Jesus … Pursues Christlikeness
How Christlike are we? We may have committed our lives to Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, at which point many things changed in our lives. We were adopted into God's family (John 1:12-13), the Holy Spirit came to dwell within us (1 Corinthians 6:19), all of our sins were forgiven (Colossians 1:14), we became recipients of eternal life (John 3:16), and we became blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3).
A Disciple of Jesus … Prays and Fasts
Anna was a remarkable woman of God. She only makes this one cameo appearance in the Bible, but her lifestyle is an example to all believers. As was customary in Israeli culture at the time, Anna probably married as a young teenager. However, her husband died after seven years. Thereafter, she felt called to a life of devotion to God, serving Him as a prophetess, speaking His words into people's lives, and spending every moment possible in the temple worshipping God with prayer and fasting.
A Disciple of Jesus …Has Jesus in the Centre
What's our first thought when we wake up in the morning? Is it to scroll through social media, checking Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp or whatnot? Maybe that's also our last thought at night, as we cling to the smart phone in bed before we go to sleep.
A Disciple of Jesus …Moves in Power of the Holy Spirit
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to move in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is one of the key signs that we are Jesus' disciples
Mark 16:17-18 - 17And these miracle signs will accompany those who believe: They will drive out demons in the power of My name. They will speak in tongues. 18They will be supernaturally protected from snakes and from drinking anything poisonous. And they will lay hands on the sick and heal them."
Passion for the Lost
In your personal lives think about those family, friends and colleagues who you'd really love to know Jesus like you do. In your actions towards those friends, pray about them consistently by name. On a Monday in 6am prayer and at 9pm prayer, people are prayed for by name. We now have a number of testimonies of the people named and prayed for coming to know Jesus. Use that prayer opportunity to bring people before the Lord by name.
A Disciple of Jesus … is Servant-Hearted
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be servant-hearted. When Jesus was teaching His disciples how they could become great in the Kingdom of God, He said the following:
"Among the heathen, the kings are tyrants and each minor official lords it over those who are lower down the chain of command, but among you it is quite different. Anyone wanting to be a leader among you must be your servant; and, if you want to be right at the top, you must serve like a slave. Your attitude must be like My own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:42-45.)
A Disciple of Jesus … Denies Himself
Jesus came to this world, not just to reveal the way of salvation and perform miracles, but also to model for us the way we were designed to live. We become disciples of Jesus as we follow in His footsteps, and seek to live our lives according to His teachings. Jesus made it clear that the first step, the gateway to entering into a fruitful discipleship relationship with Him, was to "deny self":
A Disciple of Jesus… Loves
Loving others includes loving our enemies as well as our friends, those who reject our love as well as those who reciprocate it, and those who have not yet come to faith as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ.
